The distillery is named after a fishing port on the Moray Firth near Banff, but its proprietor names the malt after the well-known salmon river which reaches the sea nearby. It was built by a consortium which included Morty Dykes and Brodie Hepburn. Extended to four stills 1966-68, its owners, William Lawson & Co are now a subsidiary of the Bacardi Corporation of Bermuda.
